Take part in the Captain Tom 100!

Welcome to our #captaintom100 fundraising page! Here you will find all you need to know about this fundraising long weekend taking place from Friday 30th April – Monday 3rd May. If you have always wanted to fundraise for Lollipop but didn’t know where to start this is a great event to be involved in because it’s quick and easy to set up your 100 challenge and start raising money!

What is the Captain Tom 100?

Friday 30th April 2021 would have been Captain Sir Tom Moore’s 101st birthday and the one-year anniversary of the extraordinary celebrations following the conclusion of his famous 100 laps of his garden that raised an incredible £38.9 million for the NHS. Tom’s simple message of hope – “Tomorrow will be a good day” – resonated around the globe during some of the darkest days of the pandemic, bringing light and comfort to millions worldwide.

Following the outpouring of heartfelt messages since his death on 2nd February, his family pledged to celebrate his life with an event that everyone, in the UK and around the world, could get involved in to celebrate Captain Tom’s generosity of spirit, the hope and joy he brought to millions, and his sense of fun. And that event is the Captain Tom 100.

Getting Involved

Everyone – of all ages and abilities – is invited to take on a challenge around the number 100 any time and anywhere over Captain Tom’s birthday weekend, starting on Friday 30th April through to Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May. That could be walking 100 steps or running 100 metres, scoring 100 goals, baking 100 cakes, climbing 100 stairs, hopping 100 laps of the garden, building 100 sandcastles, writing a 100-word poem, flipping 100 pancakes – anything at all, inside or outside.
It’s so simple. All you need to do is dream up your Captain Tom 100, fundraise or donate to the charity of your choice or The Captain Tom Foundation, and share your 100 on social media, using #CaptainTom100

Declutter and Donate this January

#declutteranddonate for Lollipop!

You might have heard of declutter and donate before; it is a good way to deal with items you no longer want because you earn some money for sending your books or DVDs etc. off to find a new home instead of sending them to landfill, and you benefit a charity at the same time. Clearing out old things is also a great way to make space for the new presents and toys children received at Christmas!

This January and February 2021 we’re asking our supporters to gather up the books/DVDs/CDs and other items they no longer want and sell them, donating the money to Lollipop via Virgin Money Giving. You can sell books/DVDs and CDs a number of ways, the easiest way is to use a website like Music Magpie or Ziffit where you enter the details of the items you’d like to sell, are offered a price for them and then post the items off for free to receive the money. Once you have been paid for the items you could donate the money to Lollipop via our Virgin Money Giving page.

Many of you may sell items on ebay or Facebook Marketplace already, could you #declutteranddonate for Lollipop in January and February and share your good deed on social media? Make sure you tag us @Lollipopyork so we can see your fundraising efforts!

Join the global day of giving!

Giving Tuesday is on 1st December. It is a global day of giving where everyone, everywhere can do something to support the good causes that mean the most to them.

This year the organisers have created an initiative called GiveBack 2020. It’s an opportunity for charity supporters (like you!) to do something positive to make a difference to a charity or charities of your choice at the end of 2020, which let’s admit, has been a difficult year for everyone.

In 2019 Giving Tuesday raised over £14 million and holds the record for the most money raised online in 24 hours!

Why support Lollipop on Giving Tuesday?

The pandemic has had a huge impact on Lollipop because our activities and fundraising events have always been face-to-face! Not being able to meet others in person has had a greater impact on the deaf community who can find video calls very difficult or inaccessible. While meeting in person has not been possible we have worked hard to adapt and provide new ways for Lollipop members and families to interact and provide support to each other. Our online bingo nights, quizzes, BSL lessons and toddler group provide regular opportunities for our members to meet, all with communications support available.

Here is some recent feedback from parents of our members:

“We would like to say a big THANK you to all and we hope you continue the great work, Lollipopers….you are part of our family and we need you more than ever now!!”
“I just wanted to say thank you for everything you do and have done especially through this crazy time.”

About our At Home with Cheryl BSL video sessions:

“We loved week one. Sat down and watched it as a family and then practiced.”

We are so grateful to our members and supporters who have adapted with us this year! Help us continue to evolve and adapt so we can provide the support needed for deaf children and young people in York and the surrounding areas! Local charity giving is more important than ever!

How to get involved

It’s very easy! Decide what you would like to do to show your support, see below for some ideas – this is your Giving Tuesday pledge. We would love for you to share your pledge on social media and tag the Lollipop page into your post using @lollipopyork on Facebook or @lollipopyorkanddistrict on Instagram.

It couldn’t be easier to complete your pledge.

  • Send e-cards for Christmas and donate the cost of the cards and stamps you would normally buy. Virgin Giving has a great selection of e-cards to choose from and there is an option to make your own design. It’s also good for the planet!

  • Donate the cost of your usual morning coffee or your morning commute.

  • Not able to take part in a Christmas Jumper day at work this year? Why not have one online and your usual donation to Lollipop this year?

Whatever you do to give back, a massive thank you to you!

We hope you have fun being part of #GiveBack 2020!

Lollipop 2.6 Challenge Banner

Everywhere!

2.6 Challenge | Launches 26th April

Join in the 2.6 Challenge with us!

We hope you and your family and friends are all keeping safe and well in these difficult times. We were sad to have to cancel all the activities, trips and fundraising events we had planned over the Summer and the activity leaders are missing seeing you all! But it is important that we all remain at home for the time being.

It’s a difficult time for charities and to try and continue our fundraising efforts in the next few weeks, we would like to invite you to take part in the 2.6 Challenge – you might have heard about it already. It is a way to support all UK charities and the more that can be raised for Lollipop by doing the 2.6 Challenge the more funds we will receive to support us. It is a fun and easy way to spend time at home and will also contribute to good causes! The 2.6 Challenge will launch on Sunday 26 April – what should have been the date of the 40th London Marathon.

The challenge

Which inventive ways can you think of to raise money that involve the number 2.6 or 26?

Or

If you do not feel like a challenge right now, can you donate £2.60, £26 or whatever you can afford to the cause?

Here is the link to our fundraising campaign page.

Why are we asking you to join in the 2.6 Challenge with us?

As a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Lollipop have had to cancel all sessions and activities for the next few months. In addition, all our fundraising events for the next 6 months have also, understandably, been cancelled. We know we’re not alone – charities across the UK are losing billions of pounds in fundraising income over the next 6 months and the challenge is a great way to support charities that are close to your heart.

What is the 2.6 Challenge?

The idea of the 2.6 Challenge is to take part in an activity of your choice, based around the numbers 2.6 or 26, and fundraise or donate to support Lollipop. You can be as creative as you like with your activity! People all across the UK will be taking part. Most people are taking part from Sunday 26 April, but you can do your activity whenever works best for you over the next few weeks.

It’s really important to remember when taking part in the challenge that you follow Government guidelines on exercise and social distancing. You’ll find information below on how to join in, as well as some ideas we’ve come up with to help you get started.

The team here at Lollipop are going to be taking part too and we’ll be sharing on our social media.

We hope you’ll join us!

How to join in

  1. Invent your 2.6 challenge! See the ideas below for some inspiration!
  2. Visit our 2.6 Challenge web page (opens a new tab) to donate or set up your own fundraising page
  3. Complete your challenge
  4. Send your photos and videos to us via email to Becky info@lollipopyork.org.uk or tag Lollipop in your social media photos

Some ideas to get you started

You can do whatever you want as part of the 2.6 Challenge. The key thing is that it involves the numbers 2 and 6 and that you have a lot of fun!

Here are some of our suggestions for things you could do:

  • You could sign the BSL alphabet in 26 seconds whilst wearing 26 pieces of clothing
  • You could learn 26 new BSL signs for different animals/places/theme of your choice
  • You could use sign language for 2.6 hours (2 hours and 36 minutes!) or 26 hours
  • You could do 2 or 6 TikTok challenges
  • You could bake 26 delicious cupcakes or biscuits decorated with icing finger spellings
  • You could try 26 new foods
  • You could make up a new dance with 26 moves and teach it to your family
  • You could choose your 26 favourite Lego pieces and make a model out of them

Whatever you do, make it something you find fun and let us know what you do!

Fundraising Update | April 2020

Fundraising Update

How the coronavirus outbreak has changed our plans

It has been difficult time for a lot of charities since the coronavirus outbreak and it will be difficult for some time to come. Here are details of what’s been happening behind the scenes at Lollipop since social distancing began and what’s coming up now all our plans have changed!

We’d like to send a huge and heartfelt thank you to John Lewis & Partners and Community Matters as we have just received confirmation of a £1,000 donation to Lollipop! As some of you will know Lollipop were part of the Community Matters scheme at the start of this year, but the temporary closure of John Lewis shops stopped the campaign in its tracks!

The coronavirus outbreak has stopped Lollipop’s many fundraising events that were planned for the Summer, this means that we won’t be able to raise as much money to help support Lollipop families.

We have had to cancel all the fundraising events below. This leaves a big gap in our fundraising for 2020 and the impact of that will felt into next year. We will of course be changing the dates for these events when we are able to do so and look forward to seeing you there when we are able to gather again.

We were on track to be the busiest ever! But this is what we still plan to do with your help…

You may of heard of the 2.6 Challenge in the media. Lollipop wants to be involved we would like everyone to help us raise as much as possible. So whether you can raise £2.60, £26 or £260 you will be making a huge difference and helping to ensure we can continue! Further details of how you can get involved will be right here on our Facebook page in the next couple of days.

Finally, thank you to everyone who supports Lollipop, whether you or your family member/s are Lollipop members, if you’re a past member, a beneficiary, funder, collaborator, fundraiser or volunteer, we appreciate your support and that’s how we know we will get through this time together!
