Have you watched the documentary on ITV by comedian John Bishop and his son Joe? It’s called Life After Deaf and it follows John and Joe’s journey into the deaf community. They talk about the family issues they have faced since Joe started to lose his hearing, start BSL lessons together and John works on creating a comedy set in BSL!

It’s a brilliant program that highlights so many reasons why it’s important for deaf children and young people (and their families) to have support and a way of connecting with each other. There are issues brought up in the program that many Lollipop families will have experienced, or may be experiencing now to do with self-esteem, self-identity and isolation.

This is the very reason Lollipop exists, to give deaf children and young people a deaf peer group to reduce feelings of isolation and misunderstanding, to build confidence, self-esteem and an individual deaf identity.

Thank you to John and Joe for sharing their experiences we are sure it will help to change perceptions of deafness and to give encouragement to families, deaf children and young people!
